Pigment and Fatty Acid Production under Different Light Qualities in the Diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

چکیده
Diatoms are microscopic biorefineries producing value-added molecules, including unique pigments, triglycerides (TAGs) and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), with potential implications in aquaculture feeding the food or biofuel industries. These molecules utilized vivo for energy harvesting from sunlight to drive photosynthesis as photosynthetic storage products, respectively. In present paper, we evaluate effect of narrow-band spectral illumination on carotenoid, LC-PUFAs TAG contents model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Shorter wavelengths blue range resulted higher production total acids, namely saturated TAGs. Longer red increased cell’s content Hexadecatrienoic acid (HTA) Eicosapentaenoic (EPA). Red induced photoprotective carotenoids, fucoxanthin. combination, results demonstrate how molecule can be modulated by light control during growth. How diatoms could use such mechanisms regulate efficient absorption cell buoyancy open ocean is discussed.

Growth of and omega-3 fatty acid production by Phaeodactylum tricornutum under different culture conditions.
Detailed studies were carried out on the effects of nitrogen source, phosphate, sodium chloride, growth factors, precursors, CO2, temperature, initial pH, and inoculum size on biomass and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) production by Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The EPA content of total fatty acids increased with increasing concentrations of nitrate and urea. Sodium chloride was not required for grow...
متن کاملDynamics of triacylglycerol and EPA production in Phaeodactylum tricornutum under nitrogen starvation at different light intensities
Lipid production in microalgae is highly dependent on the applied light intensity. However, for the EPA producing model-diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, clear consensus on the impact of incident light intensity on lipid productivity is still lacking. This study quantifies the impact of different incident light intensities on the biomass, TAG and EPA yield on light in nitrogen starved batch cul...
متن کاملGenome properties of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum.
Diatoms are a ubiquitous class of microalgae of extreme importance for global primary productivity and for the biogeochemical cycling of minerals such as silica. However, very little is known about diatom cell biology or about their genome structure. For diatom researchers to take advantage of genomics and post-genomics technologies, it is necessary to establish a model diatom species. Phaeodac...
متن کاملInventory of Fatty Acid Desaturases in the Pennate Diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum
The diatom Phaeodactylum is rich in very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Fatty acid (FA) synthesis, elongation, and desaturation have been studied in depth in plants including Arabidopsis, but for secondary endosymbionts the full picture remains unclear. FAs are synthesized up to a chain length of 18 carbons inside chloroplasts, where they can be incorporated into glycerolipids....
متن کاملBlue light is essential for high light acclimation and photoprotection in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum
The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the acclimation to different light intensities in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum is controlled by light quality perception mechanisms. Therefore, semi-continuous cultures of P. tricornutum were illuminated with equal amounts of photosynthetically absorbed radiation of blue (BL), white (WL), and red light (RL) and in combin...
